On the 16th of August, Youku's White Night Theater unveiled its latest production, "The Chronicles of Borderwater," which premiered alongside an advanced screening event called "Trespassing Three Borders." The series, known for its intricate plot twists and turns, introduces us to Shen Xing (played by Guo Qilin), an ordinary worker who finds himself stranded in an unfamiliar world, burdened with a massive debt overnight. As he flees his creditors, he is rescued by Cai Shu (played by Wu Zhenyu), a local figure of authority, who hires Shen Xing to work off his debt under the title of "Borderwater." Through Shen Xing's experiences as a "Borderwater" driver, the series exposes the chaotic and unregulated nature of the world, revealing the hidden facets of various professions and exploring the depths of human nature.

At the event, director Suan made an appearance, having previously gained significant attention for his work on the hit series "The Beginning." With "The Chronicles of Borderwater," Suan continues to showcase his distinctive and cohesive aesthetic style, employing striking visual language. He shared that every aspect of the show, from the geographical settings and character development to the opening credits and font choices, has been meticulously crafted to immerse viewers into the fictional world of "Three Borders."

As someone who pays great attention to detail, Suan revealed the considerable effort put into the opening and closing credits, as well as the subtitles. "We adopted a bird's-eye view, similar to a sandbox model, to depict the geographical features of each episode's setting. We also included Easter eggs in the opening credits to align with Shen Xing's role as a driver connecting different storylines, aiming to captivate the audience right from the start."

The unique subtitle design was another talking point among viewers at the premiere. According to Suan, this was a deliberate choice to create a consistent visual aesthetic throughout the series. "Unlike traditional dramas that typically use white Arial or Songti fonts, we opted for yellow custom fonts to reflect the distinctive cultural and geographical environment of the show, ensuring that every element complements the overall visual style."

Many attendees praised the performances of Guo Qilin as Shen Xing and Wu Zhenyu as Cai Shu. In Suan's opinion, this success can be attributed to the actors' perfect fit for their roles, their accurate portrayal of character traits, and the meticulous character design by the creative team.

Suan commended Guo Qilin for bringing a distinct comedic touch to the character of Shen Xing. "When I met with director Cao Baoping, who is the executive producer, we happened to see Guo Qilin performing stand-up comedy in the office, and it immediately struck me that he would be ideal for the part. After further discussions, it became clear that no one else could play Shen Xing as convincingly."

Regarding the cinematic quality of the series, Suan compared it to movies and short videos, highlighting the advantages of television in terms of narrative depth and character development. He believes that television offers a richer storytelling experience due to its longer format, which cannot be matched by other media forms.

"The Chronicles of Borderwater" is produced under the supervision of renowned filmmaker Cao Baoping and directed by Suan. This marks the third collaboration between Suan and Youku, following "Insane Asylum" and "Cloudland." Suan expressed his appreciation for Youku's respect for creators and its inclusive approach to content, stating, "It is both a privilege and a testament to our shared artistic vision. They provided us with tremendous support and insightful feedback throughout the creative process, making our partnership truly enjoyable."
